Who We Are

iVerify is a Fact-Checking initiative of MISA Malawi in Lilongwe, Malawi. MISA Malawi is implementing iVerify with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). We have an independent team of experts in media, law and information technology working to protect the integrity of information by exposing and debunking false information.

As an advocacy body in media freedom, freedom of expression and access to information, MISA Malawi looks at misinformation and disinformation as a threat to effective participatory democracy. With the increase in the spread of false information, more especially online, the Constitutional guarantees on media freedom and freedom of expression are under threat. False information is capable of arming the state and non-state actors to restrict the civic space. False information also undermines the right to access credible information for informed choices including during elections. In times of elections, spreading of false information brings unnecessary tension that may escalate to conflicts.

iVerify cements our belief that fact-checking and spreading of verified information protect media freedom and freedom of expression, bring integrity and sanity to the information that the citizens consume and curb violence in emotive situations such as elections. IVerify is a platform that exists to fact-check and provide verified information through multiple channels including social media and radio.  In all what we do, we believe in accountability, transparency, professionalism, and impartiality.
