True information about missing names in Malawi’s voter register

Since February 25, 2025, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has been conducting voter transfer exercise to registered voters to update their voting locations ahead of September 16 2025 general election. However, reports of names of some registered voters missing in the register emerging on Friday, March 14, 2025.

iVerify Malawi verified the information about missing records of some registered voters and determined that it is true. To arrive at this verdict, iVerify Malawi used press statement that the Malawi Electoral Commission released in the evening of Friday, March 14, 2025. In the statement, the Commission’s spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa said in the course of the ongoing voter transfer process, the Commission received reports of missing records in the preliminary voters’ register in some centres. Mwafulirwa said the Commission has immediately commenced a process of establishing the cause of the missing records and how this will be rectified.
