On March 5, 2025 story about Reserve Bank of Malawi announcing the introduction of K10,000 bank note circulated on Facebook and WhatsApp. The story claimed that Reserve Bank of Malawi Governor Dr. McDonald Mafuta Mwale announced the news during a media briefing. The story was purportedly authored by Bright Kanyama for Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) News.

“iVerify Malawi verified this content and determined that it is false. To arrive at this verdict, iVerify Malawi spoke to Reserve Bank of Malawi spokesperson Boston Maliketi Banda and he said the information is false. iVerify Malawi also checked with the purported writer Bright Kanyama who said he did not author the story and those who created it just edited the story he authored when RBM was releasing K5,000 in 2021. iVerify Malawi also understands that Reserve Bank of Malawi follows a specific procedure before releasing a banknote. Additionally, there was no RBM media briefing on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. Again the story is not on any of ZBS news platforms.
